Scientific Conference for Pupils
8. July 2022On 26 May 2022, the Faculty
of Humanities at UTB in Zlín
hosted the first-ever
Scientific Conference for
Primary School Pupils.
The conference took place as part of the faculty project
Preparation and Operation of the Centre for Education
Support, which focuses on gifted pupils from selected
primary schools in the Zlín region.
This unique event provided primary school pupils with
the opportunity to visit an academic environment and
present a topic of personal interest in the university’s
lecture hall, in front of a panel of judges.
Fifty pupils participated, either individually or in teams,
presenting the results of their research and activities in
the form of presentations. The contributions covered a
range of technical, scientific, and humanities topics.
Guests had the chance to hear a diverse and engaging
selection of presentations, such as Japanese War
Culture, Mouse-Eater, Making Medicines from Weeds,
and Time Dilation.
The performances of the primary school pupils were
assessed by a panel composed of faculty representatives
and academic staff. They evaluated the pupils’ spoken
delivery, the complexity of the topic, the quality of the
presentation, and, above all, the courage to speak in
front of an audience of guests, peers, and teachers.
Following the welcome of all participants and guests in
the FHS auditorium, the conference was opened by
Oldřich Vojta, a graduate of the Faculty of Multimedia
Communications and a current student at the Faculty of
Technology, who delivered an engaging talk on
footwear, clothing, and glass design. The contestants
were then divided into three sections where the
presentations took place.
At the close of the conference, the contestants met with
the Dean of FHS, Dr. Libor Marek, who gave a brief
closing speech and awarded diplomas for the bestpresentations.
Noteworthy contributions included a purely scientific
presentation by a Year 4 pupil on Observing and the
Regeneration Abilities of the Freshwater Planarian, as
well as a presentation by a Year 1 pupil on the topic of
Submarines.
“The aim of the conference was to provide pupils with a
platform to share the results of their school and
extracurricular efforts while also learning new things
from areas their peers are passionate about,” said Mgr.
Michal Navrátil, the main organiser of the event.
