How to Get a Job in the EU
7. June 2024The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, in collaboration with Eurocentrum Zlín and the Department of Communication on European Affairs at the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, organised a practical lecture for students considering a career in European Union institutions.
The speaker, Martin Páv, a graduate of the Université Libre de Bruxelles, shared his extensive experience. He began his career in the private sector, managing construction projects in exotic locations such as Sudan and Madagascar. In 1991, he transitioned to the European Commission, where he played a key role in public finance and banking sector reforms in Czechoslovakia as part of the Phare programme. Martin Páv’s work later extended to other countries, including the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, and the Baltic states.
He specialised in the administrative and legal aspects of public procurement and contract management, leveraging his practical expertise to provide training for the Commission headquarters in Brussels and to participate in EU delegations in third countries.
Currently, Martin Páv works as an independent consultant for companies involved in EU-funded projects supporting partner countries.
His inspiring life story and wealth of experience offered attending students valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges of working in EU institutions, as well as a glimpse into the culturally diverse and demanding environment of the European Union. Students’ interest was evident from the numerous questions posed about building a career in EU institutions, undertaking internships, and meeting language requirements.
Special thanks go to Dr. Katarína Nemčoková from the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures for organising this informative and inspiring event.
