Researchers’ Night Online with FHS Contribution

On 27 November, an evening full of popular scientific entertainment took place, allowing participants to enjoy this traditional event online from the comfort of their homes. The Faculty of Humanities (FHS) contributed to the programme on behalf of Zlín University with a lecture titled QUO VADIS, TRANSLATION?  HUMAN VS. MACHINE. This lecture was part of the “10 Minutes of Science” series, in which experienced translator and academic from the Institute of Modern Languages and Literature, Dr Katarina Nemčoková, gave the audience insight into the realities of translation. The online lecture is available here: QUO VADIS, TRANSLATION?  HUMAN VS. MACHINE.

Do we still need human translators? The presentation explores what machine translation is, how and why it emerged, and where it is heading. It answers questions about how machine translation differs from assisted translation, in what ways it surpasses human translation, where it still lags significantly, and why translators are optimistic about developments in machine translation. The lecture concludes with a glimpse into the latest advancements in machine translation and its gradual shift closer to human performance. Presented by PhDr. Katarina Nemčoková, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Humanities at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín.
