Surgeon as a Specific Helping Profession

In the intimate and very pleasant setting of the faculty’s student club, a pre-Christmas gathering was held on 18 December 2023 with a distinguished guest, Professor Vlastimil Švec, PhD.

The event was organised by the Institute of School Pedagogy as a discussion forum centred around his recently published book, “The Surgeon as a Specific Helping Profession: An Example of Interdisciplinary Cooperation.” Professor Vlastimil Švec presented the contents of the book, which seeks to uncover the specifics of the surgical profession from the perspective of an interdisciplinary-oriented educator.

The book stems from the author’s interest in medicine and his encounters with surgeons from various workplaces across the Czech Republic, with whom he conducted interviews. During the event, topics from the book were discussed, including the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation, the educator’s perspective on surgery, and the unique aspects of this helping profession. The book’s cover and graphic design were created by Professor Pavel Noga, an educator at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, Tomáš Baťa University. Illustrative photographs from surgical workplaces were kindly provided by Ostrava University Hospital.

The meeting with Professor Vlastimil Švec provided inspiration for those interested in medicine, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all participants who created a warm and open atmosphere.
Special thanks go to Professor Švec for sharing his deep knowledge and personal experiences.
