Zlín Perioperative Care Day
8. March 2024On 22 September 2023, the second conference on this topic was held in collaboration with Tomas Bata Regional Hospital in Zlín.
The event’s title hinted at the weighty focus on highly specialised and practical contributions from clinical practice across all surgical fields, combined with presentations by academic staff from the Institute of Healthcare Sciences. The significance of the gathering was underscored by its patronage, which included the Deputy Governor for Healthcare of the Zlín Region, MUDr Olga Sehnalová; the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at TBU in Zlín, Mgr Libor Marek, Ph.D.; and the Chairman of the Board of Tomas Bata Regional Hospital, Ing. Jan Hrdý.
Expert contributions, divided into morning and afternoon sessions, were organised by the programme committee, and addressed topics such as modern requirements for sterilisation, patient preparation for surgical procedures, anaesthetic techniques, and the use of intraoperative blood recovery.
The specialised segment of the conference focused on surgical procedures and the role of nursing professionals. Topics included oral, maxillofacial, and facial surgeries; the use and maintenance of instruments in robotic operations; multidisciplinary collaboration in managing severe traumas; innovative wound care techniques; and more. The fields of gynaecology and obstetrics were represented by engaging presentations such as the current respectful approach to caesarean sections and interventions to support breastfeeding.
The packed programme concluded with a lecture titled “This is Nursing”, which emphasised the indispensability of this profession and the value of holistically oriented care. It also encouraged reflection on the evolution and direction of clinical practice requirements, the preparation of non-physician healthcare professionals, and emerging trends in digital technology and artificial intelligence. The conference was open to a wide professional audience from healthcare facilities in the Zlín Region, academic staff, and students of non-physician healthcare programmes at our faculty. Participants also had the opportunity to attend two workshops, one on patient decolonisation before and after surgery, and another on nutrition with a focus on sipping for diabetic and oncology patients.
