From Ethics to Artificial Intelligence: Show-Off Competition

On Wednesday, March 20, the 13th annual English presentation skills competition called Show-off took place at the faculty.

The Show-off competition was organized by the Centre for Language Education and was attended not only by UTB students, but also by talented high school students from all over the Zlín Region.
This year’s competition was marked by topical themes that reflected the challenges of contemporary society, such as Ethics in Real Life Situations, New Concepts of Immigration, Ways of Maintaining Mental Health, Artificial Intelligence, Safety at Universities. The question of whether charity can replace the social role of the state was also discussed.
This time the competition had a great response also among foreign students who were happy to take the opportunity to show their talent and meet others. “This year we had the largest representation of foreign students ever. I am glad that the Show-off is really a competition for everyone,” says the organizer and guarantor of the whole event, Phdr. Jana Semotamová.
The jury was composed of academics, students, and partners, including P.A.R.K Cambridge, ExxonMobil, Nestlé, Oxalis, SPUR, Notino and BENNON. Thanks to their generous support, the contestants were able to receive not only scholarships and merch from the university, but also valuable prizes. Partners also presented their products on site. The contestants and their friends who came to support them could sample Nestlé bars, Oxalis teas, ExxonMobil catering and see Bennon shoes.
One of the participants was Marketing Communication student Kateřina Čtvrtečková, who came 3rd in the competition. “I was nervous at the beginning of the presentation, but as soon as I recited the learned introduction, I started to enjoy it very much. I thought the competition was great. In my opinion, the competition was amazing. I think it’s a fantastic experience, especially because it’s a place where you’re evaluated by someone other than your English teacher at school. I also got to meet so many incredible people here who speak only English,” said Kateřina.
