Be Bold and Step Up! SHOW-OFF 2022
6. October 2022This March marked the
11th edition of the Showoff competition, where
students from across the
university and secondary
schools in the Zlín Region
competed in English
proficiency and
presentation skills.
This competition is organized annually by the
Language Education Centre of the Faculty of
Humanities under the leadership of PhDr. Jana
Semotamová, who stated at this year’s award
ceremony to the winners and participants:
Why are we talking about the faculty senate? Because
it matters. Through student representatives—your
senators—you can drive meaningful change.
The elections for the Faculty of Humanities Senate
and the Faculty’s representatives in the UTB
Academic Senate for the 2022–2024 term took place
on 16th–18th February 2022.
In the sessions of both institutes, students presented
their bachelor’s or master’s thesis projects and
discussed with teachers, from whom they received
feedback.
The discussions in the sections were in the spirit of
constructive criticism and lively debate.

“Last year’s 10th anniversary edition was held online
due to COVID-19. It was an amazing experience for
everyone, but nothing compares to meeting in person.
We’re thrilled to enjoy the students’ incredible
performances face to face again.”
The judging panel included academics, students, and
representatives of UTB’s partners and sponsors.
Contestants showcased an impressive command of
spoken English and delivered their presentations at a
professional level, engaging the audience with
confidence and skill.
The winners received valuable prizes from the main
partners – Cambridge P.A.R.K. (language exam), HP
TRONIC Zlín, spol. s r.o. and Eta a.s. (electric scooters,
headphones, tape recorders, radios), ExxonMobil Czech
Republic, s.r.o. (power banks and bags full of surprises),
Oxalis, s.r.o. (coffee and fragrant teas). Additional
prizes (bomber jackets, hoodies, T-shirts) for the
competition were provided by UTB and the Faculty of
Humanities UTB.
All participants received certificates, and university
students who placed first, second, or third were also
awarded special scholarships.
In the university category, the winner was MgA.
Oldřich Vojta, a student of the UTB Faculty of
Technology. In the high school category, the top prize
went to Ayla Marková, a student at Kostka s.r.o. School
in Vsetín.
“As a spectator, I was genuinely impressed not only by
the excellent language skills of the students but also by
the way they presented their topics—completely
natural, adhering to the principles of verbal and nonverbal communication, maintaining close engagement
with the audience, employing proper rhetoric, using
the space effectively, and, last but not least,
confidently responding to questions from the panel
and especially from the native speaker,” added Dr.
Renata Šilhánová, Vice-Dean for External Relations at
FHS.

edition of the competition, traditionally held during the
spring months.
